To recap from my last blog post I went on a compelling portrait workshop run by Carolyn Mendolsohn last month in Haworth, Yorkshire. To see the previous blog click here.

So the first night at Ponden Hall was very cosy indeed!  We did all end up at the local pub to have dinner which was a great to sit down and find out from the other delegates about their lives and their journey as far as photography was concerned.  Two of the delegates Melissa and Liz had come all the way from the States to be on the course which was fabulous!

The first shoot of the day was to be at dawn.  People who know me will confirm that I don’t do mornings very well….

Kizzy who is the daughter of Steve and Julie at Ponden Hall modelled for us and boy was it chilly at the top of the moors but she was a brave thing.  The light at this time of day was worth getting up for and I certainly enjoyed playing with backlit imagery as the colours of the sky was phenomenal on the moors.

It was great for a change to take portraits that weren’t smiling – the pressure is off! The fact that Kizzy’s hair was in her eyes didn’t matter.

The image above is my favourite from that early morning shoot.

After we returned we had to reflect on what we did and also Carolyn went through how she works with children. We then we were put into teams of 2 to prepare for the children’s shoot in the afternoon.  I worked with Lel (Facebook buddies for quite a while now so it was good to meet her finally) and as with all my shoots we checked areas around the hall where we could shoot and these were:-  in the woods, by a shed, ivy in the secret garden, amongst snowdrops, the brick walls near to the hall and also down the lane on the way to the reservoir .

We were given 20 minutes will each child in our group which I thought I could work fast but it tested me which is the whole point on going on courses is to be challenged!

Here are my favourites from the afternoon!

Thank you to Oliver, Charlie, Maddy and sweet Mabel – we had such a great time and the weather!  Couldn’t have been better!
