An unusual flowerpot – Instagram

It may surprise to you to learn I’m a big fan of camera apps on my iPhone. Surely that’s cheating I hear you ask.  Well, I don’t think it is. You still need an instinct for what makes a good image and for what effect works best, but the beauty is you can create it quickly.

My favourite app is Instagram . It’s free to join and use, and as with Twitter, Facebook and Pintrest, you follow people as well as building your own following, and you can share images. There’s a great choice of 17 filters and you can try out each one to find which works best for the image you’ve just taken. My favourite is Nashville because the image really does look like it’s been taken on film. The both original and each version with a filter effect are saved to your phone’s photo library.

I also love CameraBag. It isn’t a social media tool like Instagram but I love the choice of filters and its flexibility. My favourite is ‘1962’ – a lovely, tonally rich black and white filter. I’m also fond of the nostalgic ‘1974’ and ‘Instant’ which looks like a Polaroid.Unlike Instagram, you don’t need an account. It’s very easy to use and you can try out each filter on the same image and save each version to your photo library. CameraBag costs £1.49 but it’s only available for iOS.

Same image – different filters

Hipstamatic is great fun and is a bit more random than Instagram and CameraBag – you’re never sure quite what you’ll get which I like. It costs £1.49 for iOS.

Snapseed has a great choice of filters, and as with CameraBag, you can save different versions of the same original. It’s available for iOS and Android, and it’s free.
